After the whole Sonic the Hedgehog debacle, the people behind this film promised that a new character design was underway, along with a new release date to make sure the animators have enough time to make the transition smoother. Well, we have our first trailer with the new character model and, no joke here, it's an amazing look for Sonic and one that is extremely cute and marketable.
How about the trailer itself? Well, it's still a kids movie and the story still has Sonic stuck in - ugh - the real world, but at least Sonic himself looks better now. Sonic actually has some hardcore fans out there so they will likely give Paramount Pictures some of their money now that Sonic has undergone a change.
While the trailer looks like a typical kid's movie, there are moments where it seems a bit funny. Jim Carrey might be a bit over-the-top as Doctor Robotnik but when you see what he looks like in the games, there was no way he would have fit as a subtly evil antagonist. Even with Carrey being his usual ‘90s self, the movie just seems okay, though I'm willing to have my mind changed.
Originally slated for a November release date, fans will be able to watch Sonic the Hedgehog on February 14. Thank God for that brand-new character design because it is brilliant and I wouldn't mind seeing a game that uses it.
