New Joker Set Video Shows That Clowns Do Cry

The upcoming Joker movie seems to be getting set up nicely, with many looking forward to what Joaquin Phoenix brings to the character. Director Todd Phillips is planning to make this movie more like a gangster story than a comic book one, which should make it feel fresh when it is compared to other films next year. Simply put, this film has all the potential in the world and we can only hope that it is reached.

Judging from some of the footage that has surfaced online, it looks like Phoenix's character is going to go through some hard times. Dressed as a clown, though he doesn't appear to be crazy yet, the character starts breaking down whilst in the middle of a phone call. It's hard to imagine what he will be going through, but expect it to be one heavy loss that may drive him off the edge.

If they are basing this off Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's The Killing Joke, maybe he's hearing about the death of his wife and unborn child. She dies in an accident and before he can grieve, the soon-to-be psycho is forced to take part in a robbery gone wrong. These basically follow the beats of his canon origin, as he meets Batman, falls into a pit of chemicals, and finally becomes The Joker.

Or, it could be something else entirely. The writing team might be going for something more original and it will be interesting to see where they go with this. Phoenix is a talented actor, so he will probably do a really good job; let's just hope the writers and filmmakers step up as well.

Joker is coming to theaters next year, on October 4, 2019. This will be a month before Wonder Woman: 1984, but will not be canon to that film's universe.
