Marvel's Avengers Finally Gets Its Long-Awaited Gameplay Video

After a mostly CG trailer that left most of us disappointed, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have finally given us our first look at the gameplay demo of Marvel's Avengers during Gamescom and, honestly, it looks pretty great. You better sit down for this one since it will last you about 18 or so minutes but they are action-packed and will leave a better impression after most of us were disappointed with its reveal.

Thor is our first playable character and the gameplay looks similar to Marvel's Spider-Man or Batman: Arkham Asylum. We get to see the God of Thunder wreck fools in a really fun manner and there's some neat attention to detail here, like how Thor can leave Mjolnir on an unworthy enemy so that he can use his fists and kicks.

Iron Man is up next and he's not exactly the most fun-looking character right now. After a decent-looking rail shooter segment, we see him take down a number of henchmen and turrets with his weapons and it looks more like a third-person shooter but more awkward. While not bad, here's hoping we get to see Iron Man in more fun scenarios.

Hulk is up next and fans are about to get Ultimate Destruction flashbacks. Simply put, he just demolishes the opposition here in the most brutal way possible. At one point, he gets two enemies and smashes them together; I'm surprised they didn't explode on impact, though that's something we'd likely see in The Boys.

Captain America is up next and we get more Arkham Asylum-style fighting, with some shield throwing added to the mix. It looks like a better-looking version of that one Captain America game that was released on PS3, which tied into the first MCU film. Either way, good stuff.

Finally, we end with Black Widow, who has a really fun-looking boss battle against Tony Masters aka Taskmaster. It actually starts off with a set-piece that has quick-time events and soon moves on to a great fight, though some would argue that the one in Marvel's Spider-Man was better.

Overall, it looks like a really fun game! This should have been the E3 trailer but hey, at least we can put our fears to rest.

Marvel's Avengers comes out on May 15, 2020.
