Marvel Reveals and Retcons How Captain Marvel Got Her Name and Powers

Captain Marvel is the next installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so it makes sense that a comic book detailing her origins would be released. The Life of Captain Marvel was just that, a five-issue mini-series that takes place in both the past and present, dealing with how Carol Danvers got her powers. However, as many may have feared, a massive retcon was revealed in the fourth issue after being teased in the third.

As expected, Carol is actually half-Kree and her mother goes by the name Mari-Ell. She has been hiding this side of herself from Carol for the longest time but now we know that Earth's Mightiest Hero actually has some alien in her.

The bigger change comes from how she got her powers. In the original comics, Carol got her powers from the original Captain Marvel, real-name Mar-Vell, after an accident with a laser transferred some of his DNA to hers, altering it in a huge way and giving her powers. That is no longer the case, as the laser that was attempting to hit them actually woke up her Kree powers, hence the powerset similarity to Mar-Vell.

Expect this to be a controversial change as Marvel tries to incorporate corporate synergy between the MCU and comic books. They've done this a number of times, like revealing Nick Fury's African-American son who ended taking his name and the introduction of characters like Phil Coulson. Fans don't mind the cosmetic changes in costume (sometimes) but this might be too far.

The Life of Captain Marvel #4 is now available in comic book stores.
