J. R. R. Tolkien's Family Wasn't Consulted for Upcoming 'Tolkien' Biopic

While Hollywood biopics can be pretty great, the sad matter is we need to accept that things will be changed so that certain events come off as more "cinematic." This is why certain characters act more villainous than a normal person would and how some scenes will feel a bit trite and undeserved. It might not be out yet but there's a good chance that the upcoming Tolkien movie will be a victim of this since none of his family members were consulted.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tolkien's family haven't seen the film and were not contacted about it at all. This has made some of the family members weary and they felt that it was necessary to tell the public about the dilemma. After all, if the film depicts Tolkien or anyone else in a negative light, the family might be blamed for letting it happen.

On one hand, we can see why Hollywood wouldn't want families of the subject in question to be involved. Look at something like Gotti, which had a lot of the real-life gangster's family members involved and that made the movie romanticize the man's ideals, even though he was a murderer and a criminal. Still, a little bit of consultation from the family wouldn't hurt since their name will be in it.

Tolkien comes out on May 10.
