George R.R. Martin Says 'Game of Thrones' Ending Was Freeing as a Writer

Game of Thrones is still considered by many to be one of the greatest fantasy shows we've ever seen, even if the ending was horrible. While the final few seasons do have defenders, there's no doubt that there was a dip in quality when compared to the episodes that are based on the books. George R.R. Martin, the author of these books and the man responsible for the world of Westeros, is actually relieved that the HBO series is over.

Speaking with The Guardian, Martin admitted that he felt pressured to write his books when the show was still ongoing, putting pressure on himself to make more pages. However, now that the show is over, he said that the feeling of it was "freeing," since he can now work at his own pace. That's not to say a new Song of Ice and Fire book will be coming out but hey, at least he isn't as pressured.

"Every day I sat down to write and even if I had a good day— and a good day for me is three or four pages— I'd feel terrible because I'd be thinking: ‘My God, I have to finish the book. I've only written four pages when I should have written 40.' But having the show finish is freeing, because I'm at my own pace now. I have good days and I have bad days and the stress is far less, although it's still there… I'm sure that when I finish A Dream of Spring you'll have to tether me to the Earth."

While many of us wish that Martin would just finish these books, no one should pressure him to do so. As someone who thinks Martin is kind of lazy, he should be allowed to work on his own pace. Art shouldn't be rushed after all and if we want more acclaimed masterpieces, Martin should have all the time in the world.

Also, when asked about the show's ending, he said: "We shouldn't talk about that." Nice.

Game of Thrones will soon be streamable on HBO's upcoming streaming service.
