Elsa Won't Be Getting A Love Interest In Frozen 2

It looks like fans will have to "Let it Go" if they were hoping that Elsa would get a love interest for Frozen 2, particularly an LGBT one. This is something fans have been wanting since the first film ended, especially since the song Let it Go felt like a coming-out song in more ways than one. That doesn't appear to be the case since Disney is trying to balance being feminist without being too liberal about it.

Speaking with IGN, Frozen 2 songwriter Kristen-Anderson Lopez stated that Elsa's character would not be defined by a partner, similar to the first film. They do have a point; Elsa shouldn't have a romantic interest to develop as a character but it would have been neat to see if they would push through with fan requests of her being an LGBTQ character. We're gonna have to wait a bit longer for that.

"Like the first movie, Elsa is not just defined by a romantic interest. There's so many movies that define a woman by her romantic interest. That's not a story that we wanted to tell at this point in time. What we really wanted to tell was if you have these powers, how do you grow and change and find your place in the world and find answers that haven't been found before?"

Whether she ends up being straight, a lesbian, bisexual, or one of the many queer terms out there, all we can hope for is that Elsa gets some much-needed character development in the sequel. Her character arc in the first film was far from great since Frozen mostly focused on Anna's journey to get her sister back. Considering how radically different Frozen 2 will be from the first film, we can hope for more Elsa screentime.

Frozen 2 comes out later this year on November 22, 2019.
