Disney's Live-Action Little Mermaid Film Casts Halle Bailey as Ariel

Disney's live-action version of The Little Mermaid seems to be shaping up nicely, now that some casting has been done. Variety has confirmed that the most vital casting has been accomplished as actress Halle Bailey will be playing Ariel in the live-action film. If the name sounds familiar to you, Bailey is part of the R&B group Chloe x Halle so that's great news for fans of the band.

Rob Marshall, the live-action film's director, had this to say about Halle's casting:

"After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role."

Previous reports also claimed that the studio is interested in casting Spy star Melissa McCarthy as the villainous Ursula. She has yet to be officially announced for the role but it would be a solid casting choice for the studio since McCarthy still has name value and is pretty funny when given the chance.

The original film deviated from the original fairy tale in a number of ways, removing some of the pain Ariel had to go through when she wanted to be human. In that tale, walking for Ariel would feel like walking on glass and that wasn't even the darkest part of the book. While the live-action film might adapt some parts of the fairy tale, they definitely won't use all of it.

No release date for Disney's live-action version of The Little Mermaid has been revealed.
