David Ayer Blames Batman v Superman Reviews and Deadpool's Success for Suicide Squad Getting Butchered

The journey to get an Ayer Cut for Suicide Squad continues as director David Ayer continues to talk about how executives gave his 2016 the "Edward Scissorhands" treatment. His words, not mine. It must be really frustrating to shoot a lot of things you want but have it ripped out by a bunch of executives who think they know better, despite that clearly not being the case.

As to why his movie was butchered in the first place, Ayer says there were two outliers that led to the massive reshoots; Batman V Superman not getting any good reviews and Deadpool becoming a huge critical and commercial success. Because of these two events, Warner Bros. felt it was best for them to change Suicide Squad and make it more marketable towards, let's be honest here the Marvel crowd.

We really can't blame Ayer for his frustration, though it does seem a bit convenient since the Snyder Cut is finally coming to HBO Max next year. Granted, the mass butchering of his film was made public years ago but even a director's cut released years ago did not please the masses. Since people have confirmed the much darker version of Ayer's film, one has to wonder if these tactics will eventually pay off.

Suicide Squad was originally supposed to set up Zack Snyder's two-part Justice League film but executives were cautious of the Batman V Superman reviews, which led to a ton of changes. In an ironic twist of fate, those changes also led to poorly reviewed movies that felt like pandering due to the negative reviews.

Here's hoping we get an Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad soon. Zack Snyder's Justice League will be coming to HBO Max sometime next year.
