Cyberpunk 2020 Creator is Confident That CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 Will Do the License Justice

Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a lot of hype for being a CD Projekt Red game but some fans don't even know that it's based on a table-top RPG called Cyberpunk or Cyberpunk 2020, which is a title that's going to be dated real soon. It's going to take some liberties obviously since the game did jump 57 years away from the original RPG but creator Mike Pondsmith is confident that CD Projekt Red will do a good job.

I mean, have you guys seen what they've done with The Witcher?

Speaking with Video Game Chronicle, Pondsmith stated that he was very confident that CD Projekt Red would succeed. The Witcher aside, Pondsmith revealed that these developers are fans of classic pen-and-paper RPGs, including Cyberpunk 2020, so fans are working on it. This might make some roll their eyes but it's a sweet gesture.

"Yes, but that's not why it's working now. The reason is that from the start CDPR are fans: they play the [pen and paper] game. Many of them grew up playing the game. So this is like a bunch of guys who watched the Star Wars movies as kids and then got a chance to make a Star Wars game: they would do the best damn job they could."
"That is why we went with them. This game has been optioned for years to many, many different studios. But what I saw in CD Projekt was that they really cared about it and the things that were important to us were important to them. So I knew it was in good hands."

Knowing that the game has Pondsmith's approval is nice since it means that the game will be in line with his vision. Let's hope that it lives up to everyone's expectations.

Cyberpunk 2077 is coming out on April 16, 2020, for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
