Captain Marvel is only two months away and fans are excited about it. Granted, most people will always show excitement for a Marvel Studios film since they manage to attain that sweet spot between marketable and imaginative but fans can’t help themselves. The fact that this film will have a ton of cosmic stuff in it also helps since we will be seeing Skrulls and Kree in live-action for the first time ever.
There was a time when James Gunn was involved with the cosmic part of Marvel, directing the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films as well as co-writing them. While he might be gone from Marvel Studios, it turns out that he did give out some guidance during the production of Captain Marvel, though not as much as most fans might think.
During a set visit from ComicBook.com, producer Jonathan Schwartz stated that Gunn did read the film’s script and was involved in some discussion. In the end, they managed to forge their own cosmic path for Earth’s Mightiest Hero without too much input from Gunn, though they did state that he had their love. Can’t say the same for Bob Iger but whatcha gonna do?
"I think he's read the script, we talked to him about it a little bit. It takes place before a lot of what he's doing happens, so I'm sure the Skrulls will be a fun toy to play with at some point. But I think we've really been able to do our own thing. But we love when James gives input for sure."
Everyone knows what happened to Gunn, being unceremoniously fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after members of the alt-right unearthed some controversial tweets he made years ago. It’s still a shame that he won’t be able to fulfill his trilogy with Marvel but we can only hope that his Suicide Squad movie is just as good, if not better.
Captain Marvel comes out on March 8.
