Paramount Pictures is reviving 90’s horror anthology Are You Afraid Of The Dark for the big screen. Fans will remember how each episode had two new scary stories, all of which were told by teenagers in the introduction. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be written by Gary Dauberman of It and Annabelle: Creation fame, which could mean that it will actually be scary this time.

Originally airing Nickelodeon, the show was rare for its time since it was made to try and scare young kids. We don’t see shows like this for children anymore, so the original source material deserves some credit for that, even if rewatching makes older fans realize the many faults with it. Hopefully, with Dauberman involved, the film will be a decent bit of horror for original and younger fans.

Here’s what Dauberman had to say about helming the film:

"The show is about the shared experience of telling stories — especially scary ones. We're going to celebrate that with this movie and honor the darker, scarier tone of the show, which was really groundbreaking for Nickelodeon at the time. I hope the Midnight Society approves."

Considering how well-received It and Annabelle: Creation were, it seems like Dauberman is slowly becoming a hot commodity. If Dauberman can make a Stephen King story scarier than it already is, he can turn an okay kid’s show into something legitimately scary. No release date or release window was discussed.
