AMC Theaters Will No Longer Show Any Universal Movies on Their Theaters

The movie theater business has been in big danger ever since COVID-19 started, with several businesses hoping that the government will help them out once things are better. However, some movie studios have decided to release their films digitally, which has resulted in some successes, especially for Universal Studios' recent Trolls: World Tour, which made even more money than the first film, even though it was released to home media.

However, a comment Universal CEO Jeff Shell made has led to AMC deciding to not show any of Universal's movies in their theaters from here on out. That's a shocking and ridiculous move to make since Universal is home to a number of big film franchises like Fast and Furious, which always has big box office numbers. Apparently, this is because Shell mentioned that they would simultaneously release movies in theaters and VOD once COVID-19 subsides.

It is disappointing to us, but Jeff's comments as to Universal's unilateral actions and intentions have left us with no choice. Therefore, effectively immediately AMC will no longer play any Universal movies in any of our theatres in the United States, Europe or the Middle East. This policy affects any and all Universal movies per se, goes into effect today and as our theatres reopen, and is not some hollow or ill-considered threat.

While we understand that Shell's comments might end up hurting some movie theaters, the fact of the matter is, Universal's movies make millions and billions of dollars. Hopefully, the two end up making a deal of some sort since we don't think AMC can survive this. Movie theaters are already in bad enough shape.
