New York Comic Con 2016: Review and Cosplay Photos

New York Comic Con just wrapped up last night, and as always, it was amazing. What's not to love about panels, artists, merch, and cosplayers galore?

There were a few panels that especially stood out for us, starting with Thursday's Women Warriors: An Homage to Strong Female Characters in SFF. The panel was moderated by Amy S. Foster, and the speakers included E.K. Johnston, Holly Jennings, Sam Maggs, and Margaret Stohl – a group of ladies who are all crazy smart and witty. They had some great insights about what it takes to a character who's not just a stereotypical "strong woman" – but also has nuance, depth, and complexity. And they discussed what it means, as a woman, to genuinely own your geek status.

On Sunday, Marvel premiered the new animated film, Marvel's Hulk: Where Monsters Dwell. It was definitely a fun movie – with some great quips here and there by everyone's favorite giant green dude. It also explored some pretty poignant themes – like the idea that it's not how we look, or what others think of us, that makes us who we are. And the concept that, often, the only power that fear has over us is in its ability to scare us into inaction. When we're proactive, we can usually overcome our fears. And the movie also explored the relationships between the Hulk and Doctor Strange, as well as the internal relationship between the Hulk and Bruce Banner.

The same day, we also got a sneak peak of Marvel's upcoming show Legion, premiering on FX in 2017. The show will be centered around David Haller, a.k.a. Legion, the essentially schizophrenic son of Charles Xavier. It looks like it's going to be pretty great. Visually, it's pretty intriguing, and the acting and writing seem to be spot on, as well. Aubrey Plaza, who plays David's friend Lenny, is amazing as always.
