New Dragon Ball Super: Broly Promo Reveals A Major Retcon

Toei Animation

Dragon Ball Super: Broly promises to re-introduce and canonize the fan-favorite Saiyan villain, Broly, but it looks like the upcoming film will also shake things up for other characters, and now, new details have emerged that connect back to the Dragon Ball lore.

The character bios for Dragon Ball Super recently got updated in the anime's official website, and some interesting details have been revealed in the blurbs.

The biography for Kikono reveals that he's a brand-new character taking the place of someone introduced years ago. The character is said to be a scientist who has been faithful to Frieza's mission, and he's the one responsible for creating the villain's technology.

Blankenship went on to confirm that Kikona seems to retcon another character who creator Akira Toriyama introduced back in 2014. When Saikyo Jump talked to Toriyama back then, the artist revealed that a character named Gichamu introduced the scouter technology into Frieza's army but it looks like Kikono will be taking over that role.

"Incidentally, its inventors were the Tsufruians, the original inhabitants of Planet Vegeta who were wiped out by the Saiyans," Toriayama explained. "Originally, it was a device for the purpose of guarding against enemies and beasts, but Gichamu, a highly skilled engineer in Freeza's army, laid eyes on it and made modifications for concrete battle power numbers and telecommunications abilities, and soldiers began making use of it to carry out offensives."

So it looks like Kikono is replacing Gichamu. It probably won't be an issue for Dragon Ball fans since the anime never really featured the character but the upcoming film will probably give us more information about him.

Synopsis:

"This is the story of a new Saiyan. Earth is peaceful following the Tournament of Power. Realizing that the universes still hold many more strong people yet to see, Goku spends all his days training to reach even greater heights. Then one day, Goku and Vegeta are faced by a Saiyan called 'Broly' who they've never seen before. The Saiyans were supposed to have been almost completely wiped out in the destruction of Planet Vegeta, so what's this one doing on Earth? This encounter between the three Saiyans who have followed completely different destinies turns into a stupendous battle, with even Freeza (back from Hell) getting caught up in the mix."

Dragon Ball Super: Broly is set to release in Japanese theaters this December, and it's expected to get a U.S. release in January 2019.
