New Details About Finn's Journey With Rose in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is gracing the pages of Entertainment Weekly today, even featuring a new batch of new photos and info about Rian Johnson's sequel to The Force Awakens. The magazine was also able to interview John Boyega, who plays Finn, and thanks to him, we learn more about his character's journey with Kelly Marie Tran's character, Rose Tico.

The report describes Finn as a "big deal" in the Resistance, and he "embarks on a glamorous mission to the casino city Canto Bight." He's paired up with Rose Tico, who's a Resistance mechanic and a self-described "nobody". It turns out that Finn no longer wants to be in the Resistance. Boyega says:

"It got really real for him. And he just wants to get away and not be involved. His intention in the first place was to go to the Outer Rim. He was always brought back [in The Force Awakens,], but this is his chance to get away and perhaps find Rey and go off together. He's trying to do that at first."

It looks like Finn is more determined to get what he wants in The Last Jedi, but we all know it's not going to be easy for the character. It would be interesting to see how Finn will develop to be a stronger fighter. He went on to talk about how Finn finds himself in the spotlight:

"Everyone in the space, throughout the galaxy, would have heard about the young Jedi who discovered her powers and defeated Kylo Ren and the young former Stormtrooper who helped save the day. He's a hero to people like Rose, who fight for the Resistance because their homes have been destroyed by the First Order."

It looks like Finn will have some interesting inner conflicts in the film. As for Marie Tran's character, Rose is described as being "a gearhead, a grease monkey, a behind-the-scenes jack-of-all-trades." She has a sister named Paige, who's described as "the dynamic one — a Resistance gunner who fights on the front lines alongside Resistance luminaries like Poe Dameron, Oscar Isaac's X-wing ace." Tran describes her as a nobody:

"Poe Dameron is super cool. Finn's super cool. Even though [Rose] is good at what she does, she's not known. She'snotcool. She's this nobody, this background player, which is what makes her interesting. She's not the best. She's not royalty. She's someone who is just like everyone else."

It's interesting that they're bringing a character that a lot of people could relate to. I'm sure their interaction will bring a lot of comedic moments to the film. When Rose and Finn meet, she's starstruck with him but Finn doesn't think he deserves to be perceived that way. Boyega explains:

"He appreciates the adoration for a second, but when he meets her, Finn is trying to escape the whole war. He's trying to leave. And she comes in and basically gives him a depiction of himself that wasn't necessarily true."

I still wonder how Finn and Rose's journey will merge with Rey and Luke's. It seems like the pair won't meet the Jedi team until the final act of the film.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released in theaters on December 15, 2017.
