Netflix Working On Saint Seiya Reboot

After succeeding with the Voltron reboot, Netflix looks to do the same with the classic anime Saint Seiya. The popular online streaming service recently ordered 20 different anime series' including a reboot for the 30-year-old property. Considering the success of Voltron, which recently wrapped up it's third season, expectations for the show are high.

Variety confirmed that Greg Peters, the Netflix Chief Product Officer, announced a number of new anime in Tokyo earlier this month. The company is focusing on working with Japanese animation studios, since the demand for more animated shows is high. Toei Animation will be working on the Saint Seiya reboot, with Eugene Son of Avengers: Secret Wars fame writing all 12 half-hour episodes.

Aside from the aforementioned reboot, fans were also surprised to see Cannon Busters announced as one of the upcoming new animated shows. Cannon Busters was a 2005 comic book previously under Devil's Due, before moving to UDON who also publish the popular Street Fighter comics. The comic book adaptation will also be 12 episodes.

The reboot will be called Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya, which could be a subtle way to try and rebrand the old property to newer audiences. While the series hasn't been as relevant as something like Dragon Ball, it was popular enough to get a PS4 game a few years ago. Since the series does have a lot of fans, rebooting it could be tricky, but the constant high quality of Netflix shows could ensure success.
