Netflix Plans to Produce 30 'New' Anime Series in 2018

2018 is going to be a big year for Netflix as the streaming giant plans to spend $8 billion on original content and add 80 original films by next year.

In a report by The Verge, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said that a huge chunk of that $8 billion will go toward producing 30 new anime series. While the company has kept its viewership numbers under wraps, Sarandos' willingness to reveal film and anime metrics is a good sign that investments in those areas have been successful.

If they want to draw more viewers who love anime, they would have to do better than Crunchyroll when it comes to streaming the best anime titles. Last month, the streaming service debuted its first original anime series Neo Yokio, in which Jaden Smith lends his voice to Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig's strange anime series. Hopefully, Netflix will produce better anime series than Neo Yokio.
