Netflix Gains 5.3 Million Subscribers; Plans to Release 80 Original Films in 2018

While the amount of cable TV subscribers is declining, Netflix continues to dominate the enttertainment business as the streaming giant beat industry predictions by ending their Q3 with 5.3 million subscribers, Variety reports. That's up 49% year-over-year.

With great origina. shows like Sense8 and Stranger Things, it's not surprising that Netflix has gained many subscribers, and even though they've been pulling massive amounts of debt to bring more original content available for streaming, it shouldn't be a problem if they keep growing.

Variety also reports that Netflix plans to release 80 original films in 2018. Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said that the films could "range anywhere from the million-dollar Sundance hit, all the way up to something on a much larger scale."

One of the larger scale films is David Ayer and Will Smith's Bright, and using that film as an example, "I think people will start seeing the potential for this original movie initiative, that it could be done on the enormous scale we have on the television side."

According to CNN, Netflix has plans to spend $8 billion on original shows and films in 2018. Here's what the company said in a statement:

"We have a good head start, but our job is to improve Netflix as rapidly as possible ... to stay ahead of the competition in the decades to come."

I hope Netflix uses a chunk of that $8 billion to make a third season for Sense8, which I think is their best original series.
