NBC Reboots Witchblade with Help from The Vampire Diaries' Showrunner

It looks like NBC is getting back into the superhero genre with an attempt to reboot Witchblade into a new series. Witchblade, a comic book series published by Top Cow from 1995 to 2001, chronicles the adventures of lady cop Sara Pezzini who battles criminals and supernatural evil, using the powers of a mysterious magical bracelet. NBC has committed to a script and, if the series looks promising, it might fill the sci-fi/horror hole left by the closure of Grimm this year six long seasons.

The Hollywood Reporter says that NBC has tapped Caroline Mendelsohn (CSI) and Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries) to be Witchblade's new executive producers and possibly eventual showrunners.

TNT had produced a Witchblade series starring Yancy Butler as the driven detective with a path etched in darkness. That show lasted only for two seaons from 2001-2002. With Mendelson and Dries at the helm, expect more grit and suspenseful storytelling hewing closer to the style of Jessica Jones rather than the cheerfulness of Charmed and Supergirl combined.

After all, comic book creator Marc Silvestri's rendition of Witchblade was considered adult material back then, and left a lot of fan boys drooling.
