Mother Apologizes for Auctioning Rare 'Magic: The Gathering' Card Collection for $9

A mother in Japan barely avoided a disaster for her son's rare Magic: The Gathering card collection. After her son had moved away, she was cleaning the clutter of his room and discovered some trading cards. She thought the art of the cards were pretty interesting, and decided to auction them on yahoo auctions, rather than throw them away.

Bidding for the auction started at $9 (1,000 Yen), and was described as "a variety of old cards". She added, "objectively they are beautiful". She also provided three photographs of the collection:

It didn't take long for the internet to discover the auction had a Black Lotus ($6,000 value), Ancestral Recall ($1,900 value), Time Walk ($1,400 value), and Timetwister ($1,000 value) in the photograph. The mother went back later to check on the acution and discovered bidding had blown up to $5,400 (601,000 Yen). With only 5 days left in the auction, she apologized to the bidders and closed it down, saying she didn't realize how valuable the cards were.

Apparently, her son had called her and was very irate, and will be picking up his cards soon.

Let's take a moment to thank the talented artists of Magic: The Gathering, that inspired this mother to auction off, rather than trash these rare Magic cards. And remember, if you have a valuable collection at a relatives house, tell them!
