Miguel Ferrer, who played the staunch assistant director Owen Granger in NCIS: Los Angeles, passed away in January 19 due to throat cancer at the age of 61. A versatile character actor who swung playing roles from hero to villain, Ferrer had a solid acting pedigree. His father, legendary thespian Jose Ferrer, appeared in landmark films like Lawrence of Arabia, The Caine Mutiny, and The Greatest Story Ever Told. His mother, actress-singer Rosemary Clooney, is probably best remembered for her co-starring role in Bing Crosby's White Christmas.
Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney is Miguel Ferrer's cousin, and singer Debby Boone is his sister-in-law.
In the sci-fi universe, Ferrer explored the eerie as an FBI agent in Twin Peaks and plotted against the U.S. President in Iron Man 3. One of his first screen appearances as a starting actor was as a Starfleet officer in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, directed by Leonard Nimoy. Decades later, he would play opposite Nimoy again, but this time as a seasoned star in his own right in a modern-day adaptation of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.
The Los Angeles Times published the statement released by Hollywood icon George Clooney on his cousin's death:
"Today history will mark giant changes in our world, and lost to most will be that on the same day Miguel Ferrer lost his battle to throat cancer. But not lost to his family. Miguel made the world brighter and funnier, and his passing is felt so deeply in our family that events of the day (monumental events) pale in comparison. We love you, Miguel. We always will."
The last two productions that Ferrer was working on were genre shows. He had just finished shooting a return to Twin Peaks in its modern version. He also voiced the character of the amoral assassin, Deathstroke, in the upcoming animated film of the comic book classic, The Teen Titans: The Judas Contract.
