Mel Brooks Says Star Wars Reawakening Has Restarted Talks On Spaceballs 2

Lucasfilm's epic franchise from a galaxy far, far away reawakened after the release of its first Star Wars saga sequel trilogy installment The Force Awakens back in 2015, and ever since then films from the franchise have become the most highly anticipated movies each year.

With its resurging popularity, filmmaker Mel Brooks has started considering making a sequel to the 1987 Star Wars spoof, Space Balls.

Earlier this week Brooks attended a screening of his horror-comedy film from 1974, Young Frankenstein, and then held a Q&A session whit his audience. Asked about whether he'd still be making Spaceballs 2 , Brooks replied that the popularity of the new Star Wars installments has gotten MGM interested in making the spoof's sequel.

While Spaceballs didn't necessarily become a big hit during its release, it has gathered a cult following in the years over its release with many considering the film as another classic. MGM could bank on the success of Star Wars this time around and could probably build the sequel around the prequel films or the installments in the sequel trilogy.

They could probably even make a spoof out of the different rumors regarding Star Wars: The Last Jedi which premieres on December 15 this year. We'll just have to wait and see whether MGM gives the green flag on Spaceballs 2.
