“Massive Amounts” Of Luke’s Backstory Has Been Left Out Of The Last Jedi

Star Wars fans might have a lot of questions about what happened to Luke Skywalker(Mark Hamill) in between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, however it seems like director Rian Johnson won't be offering a lot of the Luke's back story in The Last Jedi.

Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly for the publication's cover story on The Last Jedi, Star Wars legend Mark Hamill reveals that "massive amounts of backstory" will be missing from The Force Awakens sequel because they weren't considered essential to the film's story.

"There's massive amounts of back story that is left to your imagination and I couldn't do my job without figuring out what that was. Since it's not really important to the main story as a whole a lot of it is just for my own process. I talked with Rian about it and went into this elaborate scenario of what happened to Luke after the end of the Return of the Jedi."

The sequel trilogy turned Luke into a jaded Jedi Knight and fans have been hoping that The Last Jedi would dive deeper into the events that have made Luke weary enough to say that "it's time for the Jedi to end."

However, while it is disappointing that most of Luke's backstory won't make it into The Force Awakens sequel, it does make sense that Johnson would want to chop off parts of Luke's back story that's unnecessary to The Last Jedi – Luke's old adventures can be told some other time.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits cinemas December 15, 2017.
