Marvel Might Be Thinking Of Bringing Back James Gunn For A Different MCU Project

It looks like all Disney might actually be thinking of bringing back Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn – just not for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, multiple sources have told the publication that Marvel is hoping that the ongoing talks about post-termination payout between Disney and Gunn will help bring the director back to either direct or develop one of the studio's movies for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The director was fired by Disney last month after an alt-right smear campaign brought back offensive and inappropriate tweets that Gunn had made 14 years in the past. Saying that he had apologized for them before, and apologizing for them again, Gunn argued that he had changed since he had made those tweets and the Guardians of the Galaxy cast along with some fans and celebrities have decided to rally alongside the director.

Now, according to one of THR's sources, "an end-all verdict still hasn't been issued and conversations with Marvel are still ongoing" regarding Gunn's potential return. Despite this ruckus going on because of the smear campaign, the director was an asset to Marvel. At one point, the studio even had the director help build the Marvel Cosmic Universe. Though the director might not be brought back for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, having him work on one of the Phase 4 films is better than nothing at all.
