Marvel Fans Have Mixed Feelings Hearing The Recent Black Widow Movie Announcement

Marvel might have finally seriously begun working on its Black Widow movie, nabbing Berlin Syndrom and Lore director Cate Shortland as its director, but it looks like Scarlett Johansson's standalone is drawing some flak from fans.

Taking to Twitter to respond to the news that Marvel landed Shortland for is Black Widow superhero movie, fans' interest in the film seems to have dissipated. Partly because of how long it's taken Marvel to work on the Black Widow standalone, and partly because of the way Johansson responded to the recent backlash of her being cast in Rub and Tug.

Sure everyone might love Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but these past few years Johansson has been finding herself at the center of controversy. The actress previously had to ride through a wave of backlash for playing Motoko Kusanagi in the live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell and more recently she's been under fire for accepting a transgender lead role in Rub & Tug.

Here's what fans have been talking about online:

Of course, there are fans excited about the Black Widow standalone and about Shortland directing the movie, but it's pretty disappointing to see the news sour because of the controversy surrounding Johansson. Marvel had pretty bad timing announcing that it's given the Black Widow movie's reigns to Shortland.

The Black Widow movie doesn't have a release date yet, but fans will be able to see Johansson on the big screen again when Avengers 4 premieres on May 3, 2019.
