Marvel Cinematic Universe is The Highest Grossing Movie Franchise in the World Right Now

Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron just scored the highest opening weekend of all time in the U.S. box office over the weekend, with revenue of $187.7 Million. The film has earned a total of $626 million globally to date; the Marvel Cinematic Universe has now grossed a total of $7.787 billion worldwide, taking the top spot from the Harry Potter franchise, which now falls to second place with $7.723 billion.

With Marvel Studios and Disney now releasing two to three films a year under the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, it's unlikely that they'll lose the top spot any time soon. Harry Potter,James Bond, Middle-Earth, and Star Wars are are the other franchises in the top five. Although Star Wars will be releasing one movie each year starting this year, it's very likely that the franchise will compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Either way, Disney wins since they own both franchises.
