Marvel Announces Darth Maul Comic

A new comic focusing on the Star Wars villain Darth Maul has been announced, USA Today reports. The five issue miniseries will be titled Star Wars: Darth Maul. It is set to debut in February 2017.

The series will be written by Cullen Bunn, who is known for his work on Marvel's Uncanny X-Men. It will be illustrated by Luke Ross, who also drew Marvel's Star Wars: The Force Awakens comic adaptation. The comic will focus on Maul's younger days and will be set before the Sith apprentice's appearance in Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

The comic will show Maul as a warrior still in training under Darth Sidious and forbidden from taking on Jedi. He vents his frustration by wreaking havoc in the cosmic underworld. When he finds that a Jedi padawan named Eldra Kaitis has been seized by a crimelord, he takes the opportunity to both test his fighting abilities against the padawan and try to turn the young Jedi to the Dark Side.

Bunn says he's eager to use the series to explore where Maul's "impatience and anger" comes from. He promises there will be scenes focusing on the relationship between Maul and Darth Sidious, who isn't a very "warm teacher". He says the young Jedi Eldra will have "a huge impact on Maul's life going forward". Finally, the states the series will explore the thin line between the dark and the light. " A big part of the story is Darth Maul's descent to the dark side and almost being tempted away from it," Bunn says.

Even though his appearance in Phantom Menace was short lived, Maul is a fan-favorite thanks to the huge impression his appearance and attitude made, not to mention his role in Star Wars: Clone Wars. It'll be interesting to learn more about him. Are you looking forward to a Darth Maul miniseries?
