Mark Hamill Wanted To Push Luke’s Death To Star Wars: Episode IX

Luke Skywalker might have given up his life to save the remainder of the Resistance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but Star Wars legend Mark Hamill was actually hoping that director Rian Johnson might save the blow for Star Wars: Episode IX.

Speaking in the behind-the-scenes documentary of The Force Awakens sequel, The Director and the Jedi (via We Got This Covered), Mark Hamill opened up about what he wanted for Star Wars 9, his pitch involving Luke Skywalker sacrificing himself for the Resistance.

“My first reaction was, ‘Can’t we push this off until [Episode] 9? Luke eventually does the right thing selflessly for the good of the Rebel Alliance, and [I realized] I should do the selfless thing for the betterment of the movie. Seriously. I’m not trying to be self-aggrandizing, I’m just saying, in the greater scope of things, number one, I never expected to come back, so this is all like found money.”

Though fans would have wanted to see Luke living to fight along with the Resistance in J.J. Abram’s second Star Wars movie, we don’t think The Last Jedi would have been as strong had the film kept Luke alive. Besides, it’s hard not feeling moved to seeing Luke disappear into the Force while watching twin sunsets on Ahch-To after saving the Resistance.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is available on Digital HD. The film will also be made available on Blu-Ray and DVD on March 27.
