Mark Hamill Shares Carrie Fisher's Thoughts on Returning to the Star Wars Saga

Mark Hamill shares the long conversations he and Star Wars co-star, the late Carrie Fisher, used to have when they were first invited to reprise their roles in the new movies. The two were close friends and debated the pros and cons about making Luke and Leia come alive for the next generation, after 30 years of cinematic absence.

In his interview with Yahoo News, Hamill says that Fisher took the challenge head-on.The aging of their characters was something that had to be faced, both by the actors and their audience. At the same time, Fisher saw an opportunity which was becoming rare to actors who had supposedly passed their prime.

Hamill says:

"And we both had trepidations about coming back — like, is this the right thing to do? I mean, it should be about the young generation. We had our fears. But she was really candid about the fact that, you think it's hard for men to age in this business, it's 10 times worse for women. Where they feel like they're not useful after 50, which is crazy! I don't know. It was wonderful to see her be able to reemerge the way she did."

Although still saddened by Fisher's passing away, Hamill is grateful for that last opportunity to work with her again in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, something that is not readily available even to showbiz buddies whose work schedule keep them away from each other.

Hamill continues:

"And I think she found it comforting, because I was a constant in the fact that I didn't really change and she could rely on me and she could confide in me."

Another reunion between Hamill and Fisher is no longer possible. But thanks to special effects, a virtual one between Luke and Leia can still happen as the sequels from the Star Wars saga continue to unfold.
