Mark Hamill 'Channeled' Alec Guinness To Play An Older Luke Skywalker

With Rey being the new protagonist of the sequel trilogy, Luke Skywalker will now be taking the Obi-Wan/Yoda role of mentor in Star Wars The Last Jedi. As it turns out, Mark Hamill will be taking some cues from the actor who played his mentor on Star Wars, Sir Alec Guinness.

Talking to Yahoo Movies, Hamill admits:

"I was completely in awe of this man… but in terms of studying him for this film, I channeled his dignity and his composure."

Despite this, Hamill also makes sure that he isn't entirely copying Obi-Wan Kenobi. He says:

"But Obi-Wan has a much different back story than Luke… so although there are many similarities, you have to really sort of take ownership of your own character."

When he first met Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, he was a good-hearted, whiny farm boy, but at this point in the story, Luke would have faced the Empire, started a new Jedi Academy, and watched it all crumble before him.

Luke has gone through a lot over the course of 30 years, and hopefully the movie gives us satisfying answers on what happened to Luke and why he decided that the Jedi should end. Some people may want to see another "return" of the Jedi, but I'm guessing Luke is ready to embrace a higher form of Force-users—the Gray Jedi.

For people who don't know what a Gray Jedi is, they're basically Force-users who get the best of both the light side and the dark. Sure the dark side makes you more powerful, but the light side is still there to keep you more balanced and attune to the universe.

It's a very "Legends" concept, but it would be cool if they could have it in the movie.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out Dec. 15.
