Yesterday, we reported about the time Magic: The Gathering Senior Game Designer Gavin Verhey told the crowd to "stay tuned if you like Kamigawa" during a panel at SCG Con. While that caused some fans to speculate that Wizards of the Coast is planning to make a return to the Japanese-themed plane in a set that would be released in the near-future, others think that Gavin is only teasing a supplementary product, not a full expansion for Standard format because of the context in which he said it.

Today, a fan asked Magic Head Designer Mark Rosewater, a.k.a. MaRo, if he could "make a successful return to Kamigawa if given the operative?" And MaRo responded on his Blogatog page, saying, "I couldn't do it and make the majority of players asking for the return happy."

The sets for the Kamigawa block were released in 2004 to 2005, and while players enjoyed the cool the Japanese themes and flavor of the set, many criticized the overall quality of cards. In my opinion, I thought it was one of the worst Magic blocks ever designed. The mechanics just weren't that great. Even Rosewater himself bashed the set back in January but later apologized for it.

Maybe Wizards of the Coast could start from scratch and refashion Kamigawa to make it more interesting than ever before.
