Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy Offering Taika Waititi A Chance To Direct A Star Wars Movie

It looks like things are only going to get better for New Zealand director Taika Waititi. Not only has Thor: Ragnarok raked in stellar reviews and a box office gross of $819 million in under five weeks, but it seems like Lucasfilm would love to offer the filmmaker a place in the Star Wars franchise.

Sitting down to speak with Newshub, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy started sending out a signal for Waititi, saying that she would “love” for the director to helm a Star Wars movie for the studio.

“I would love for him to direct a Star Wars movie. I think he has exactly the right sensibility. It was very exciting to see him step into the Marvel universe and do such an amazing job with Thor.”

Kennedy seems pretty keen on having Waititi on board, because the Lucasfilm bigwig then encouraged the publication to “let him know” about the informal job offer. While having Waititi on board seems like a great idea given his offbeat humor and his comedic talents, we’re not sure whether handing the filmmaker a Star Wars project wouldn’t end up in another Phil Lord and Chris Miller Han Solo situation. Remember how Lucasfilm decided to fire the tag-team because they made Solo: A Star Wars Story too comedic and encouraged the cast to do too much improv? Well, guess who else likes improv – Waititi.

Let’s just wait and see what happens.

Lucasfilm’s next Star Wars project, The Last Jedi, hits cinemas December 15, 2017.
