Lucasfilm Successfully Creates A Working Lightsaber

Want to build your own real-life lightsaber? Yes? Of course, yes! Then you might want to check out the first episode of the new web series of videos by Lucasfilm and IBM called Science and Star Wars. The show focuses on using real-world science and technology to see how close they can get to bringing some of Star Wars' fictional elements like The Force, blasters, and of course, lightsabers.

Host Anthony Carboni and Star Wars Rebels voice actor Taylor Gray work together to create their own version of the iconic laser sword. Gray, who provides the voice of Ezra Bridger in Disney XD's animated series, worked with Carboni and YouTube star Allen Pan to build a "plasma blade", which is pretty much the closest thing to a lightsaber in our time.

The process start by creating a source of heat that could make plasma, so that means you can't choose an allegiance-based color. It will always be white. Then they build a thermic lance made of steel wool, carbon steel tubing, and a tank of oxygen. After assembling the device, they use their "plasma blade" to recreate one of the opening scenes from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in which Qui-Gonn Jinn slices through a steel door with his lightsaber.
