It’s official. Lucasfilm has decided on giving Star Wars: Episode IX to director J.J. Abrams  a week after the departure of the project’s original director, Colin Trevorrow. There’s been a lot of controversy and anxiety in the Star Wars community ever since Lucasfilm decided to fire the Jurassic World director over “creative differences.”

In an attempt to calm the storm, the studio has recently announced in a new press release that they would be handing over the final chapter of the Star Wars sequel trilogy to the man that managed to reawaken the Star Wars franchise. Though many predicted that Star Wars: Episode IX would end up with The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, it seems like Lucasfilm has decided to have the sequel trilogy come together full circle with Abrams directing as well as co-writing alongside Chris Terrio.

“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.

Of course, while Abrams did manage to resurrect that Star Wars saga, quite a number of fans complained that The Force Awakens felt too much like a rehash of A New Hope. Let’s hope that Episode IX won’t end up being too much like Return of the Jedi with Abrams behind the wheel.

Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled for release on May 24, 2019. The next Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi, hits cinemas December 15, 2017.
