Kyber Crystals Rumored To Appear In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Warning: Potential spoilers for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ahead. You have been warned.

Kyber Crystals are popular in the current Star Wars canon as rare, Force-attuned crystals used to power lightsabers. They were shown in the unreleased The Clone Wars episode titled Crystal Crisis on Utapau, where Palpatine was revealed using such crystals to power the original Death Star. Kyber Crystals were also seen as powering the gigantic weapon of destruction in the Star Wars Rebels episode titled Breaking Ranks.

Naturally, such links to the Death Star would hold the possibility of the Kyber Crystals becoming an element in the narrative of the upcoming Rogue One.

It's not entirely surprising now that a new report is claiming that Kyber Crystals will appear in Rogue One.

According to Making Star Wars:

The crystals are being (mined?) taken from a mountain where the crystals are placed into crates. There is a communication platform there on the side of the mountain where Imperial Scientists reside. Death Squad's Death Troopers are also at the location for the sequence. On set there were a lot of crates. We may have seen these crates in drone photos but we aren't certain yet.

In the Rebels Recon episode for Out of Darkness, it was said that it requires eight Kyber Crystals to power the Death Star. While it may not be possible that more crystals are required for the first Death Star in Rogue One, being that the film takes place before A New Hope, there's a chance that the Empire is already building the second Death Star as Plan B.

Of course, this report may not be true until proven otherwise by Disney or Lucasfilm, so it would pay to take a grain of salt with this one.

In any case, important questions will likely be answered during the Rogue One panel at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016, where Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy andRogue One director Gareth Edwards will be in attendance.

Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016 will be held at London's Excel Centre from July 15 to 17, while Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will hit theaters on December 16.
