There is a lot to decipher in the final action-packed episode of The Witcher’s first season. Aside from leaving a huge cliff hanger with Ciri and Geralt finally crossing paths, one thing that the viewers were curious about is Vilgefortz’s drastic change of character towards the ending of the episode.
This article contains SPOILERS for Netflix’s The Witcher.
Engaged in a battle with Nilfgaard, the mages disperse themselves in order to cover as much space as possible to avoid getting the Nilfgaardians to attack Sodden. Vilgefortz portals to Cahir’s location which ended up with him getting defeated and knocked down the hill. At this point, the viewers thought that the mage died when he hit his head on a log.
When Yennefer tries to call out any other mages for help, Vilgefortz managed to wake up. However, what the people didn’t expect is that the mage actually ends up killing another Northern mage, which ultimately makes him a traitor.
When asked what that scene conveys during a recent AMA on Reddit, showrunner Lauren Hissrich gives some details about what happens with Vilgefortz in the following season.
“There’s much more to be learned about this particular sorcerer, and I don’t want to spoil that,” she said. “But I will say that his temper is covering a great amount of frustration at things not going his way.”
Not much is known about Vilgefortz yet since he has only appeared for around two episodes in the first season. However, judging from HIssrich’s comments, it looks like the viewers would get to find out why he killed a fellow sorcerer and learn more about the character in the second season.
