There's no doubt that Disney has been taking steps forward in improving LGBTQ representation, with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker publicizing having its first queer characters in the franchise. However, the pair ended up getting featured in only a two-second background scene. As you might expect, the film has been criticized for this by some fans and critics, including The New Mutants director Josh Boone.
In a recent interview with TooFab, Boone took a shot at the Star Wars movie, saying that The Rise of Skywalker was the "most embarrassing" example of queer representation. "It was just somebody in the background and [the filmmakers] were like, 'We'll put out articles as if this is something you should pay attention to," the director added.
As mentioned, Boone is referring to the short clip featuring the same-sex couple as they share a celebratory kiss. It's only worth noting that despite this being a short moment in the movie, it was still enough to prompt censorship from some international markets, including from its Middle Eastern release.
With the House of Mouse is one of the biggest entertainment companies, it is a shame that the LGBTQ characters' breakthrough moment was reduced to a short interaction and little story significance that left people disappointed.
As opposed to Boone's movie, set to release this August 28, The New Mutants will focus on the relationship between Moonstar and Wolfsbane, making the pair's same-sex love story central to the film's plot.
