Despite having various action-packed scenes from The Mandalorian, it seems like the surprise character, Baby Yoda, gets to steal the spotlight of every episode from the first until the latest one. Even a new meme was born from the adorable scene, but it wasn’t easy for Episode 4 director Bryce Dallas Howard to get the perfect cut.

This article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian’s Episode 4, do not read further if you haven’t watched the show yet.

In a recent interview with Variety, Howard details what it was like to take on an episode of The Mandalorian, as well as her thoughts about the Baby Yoda sipping soup scene that eventually became a meme. She said the shoot for that day was supposed to be focused on the “brutal fight” between Gina Carano’s Cara Dune and Pedro Pascal’s Mando. However, when it got to filming The Child sipping his soup, “everything else goes away,” Howard admitted.

“All these amazing feats of athleticism and martial arts, and all this stuff just becomes Baby with soup,” she added. Howard revealed that they wanted to do “a zillion takes” of the baby because they weren’t really sure how a baby would go about drinking the soup. The director was torn with the take, asking themselves if they should do it with Baby Yoda holding the soup with one hand, two hands, or if he would sip a lot or just a little.

Regardless, their efforts to make the scene look right paid off since that short clip from the fourth episode was received well by the fans of the series. This just goes to show that even minor details like these are being put into thought in order to make a scene have the right tone.

Fans are surely excited to see more of the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda’s adventures together while they try to flee from bounty hunters with the Child as their target.
