With his name yet to be revealed, Star Wars fans have been referring to The Child as Baby Yoda since the first episode of The Mandalorian because it resembles that of a young version of the Jedi Master. And while it is already known that the character isn’t a child version of Yoda, is The Child related to him in any way?

Speaking with USA Today at the Golden Globes, Jon Favreau clarifies the confusion about the character amongst some other fans. “The series timeline takes place after Return of the Jedi,” he said. “And fans of the original trilogy will remember that Yoda not only passes away but actually disappears. So Yoda exists as a Force Ghost.”

Favreau said Baby Yoda earned his name because there was “no name for the Yoda species.” He thinks that name is the “easiest, shortest, most hashtagable way to identify that character.” Favreau pointed out that he was referred to as The Child, which is evident in the title of the second episode of The Mandalorian.

When asked whether The Child is related to Yoda, it seemed like Favreau is keen on not revealing any information yet. After all, they kept the character as a secret and even ended up (initially) not being included in the merch. “Well, now you’re getting into spoilers,” he said. Favreau claims that he can’t say, but mentioned that there are already “a lot of theories” about Baby Yoda’s connection with the iconic Star Wars character.

Fans are yet to know about their connection, but it looks like they’d get to learn more about the species in the second season. If you recall, the Armorer advised Mando to take The Child to his home planet where he can reunite with his own species, which is definitely an intriguing and highly-anticipated story for the fans.
