It’s no secret that Star Wars: The Last Jedi remains a divisive movie ever since its debut in 2017. It’s still debated amongst fans, critics, and even the crew, with the latest person to chime in is The Clone Wars’ Sam Witwer, who feels director Rian Johnson didn’t do his homework in making the movie.

During a recent Twitch stream, Witwer discussed various Star Wars projects, including The Last Jedi. He then shared his thoughts about Johnson's film, saying that it “felt like a movie made by a guy who hadn't quite done his homework.” He did make it clear that he thinks Johnson is a “talented guy,” however, he pointed out that “Bruce Lee didn't develop Jeet Kune Do without learning Kung Fu first.”

You can't reinvent Star Wars without knowing Star Wars first,” Witwer added. “And he didn't -- for me -- make a compelling argument for why Luke didn't go and help his sister."

He then said that this is just his opinion and that there were “a lot” of things in The Last Jedi that Witwer found “compelling” in a “Rian Johnson filmmaker point of view.” However, he thinks they “didn’t fit” into Star Wars, thus thinking that Johnson didn’t do his “Star Wars homework,” regarding the themes, the characters, and the universe as a whole.

"But as a standalone film, if I don't know what the Jedi are or who Luke is or what he represents, I think there are some compelling things in there,” Witwer added. “If that's meaningful to you, that's awesome."

Witwer has had plenty of experience in the galaxy far, far, away, and his comments are certainly intriguing. Of course, this is just his opinion and some might not agree with him, but it is clear that he made these comments with respect to Johnson and his work.
