Fans already got a glimpse of what's to come in Matt Reeves' The Batman when the director shared a camera test video as well as some behind-the-scenes photos that show off the general mood and tone of the movie. While it wasn't Reeves' intention to create what seems to be the darkest looking Batman movie, cinematographer Greig Fraser reveals it wasn't actually intentional.
In a recent interview with Collider, Fraser teased what to expect in the film, pointing out that they wanted The Batman to adapt the comics as faithfully as possible. "It's a good question and it's a question we ask ourselves," he said. "I can't talk specifically of course."
"There's darkness in the character for sure and we need to create a mood, which is obvious, it's a Batman film," Fraser added. "I don't think it's going to be oppressively dark in terms of visually, because that's not what we're trying to (do)."
Fraser also made it clear that they aren't trying to have a competition on who can go the darkest of the darkest with these Batman movies. Instead, they plan to have the Robert Pattinson feature "create intrigue."
"I love the way some of the comics look. You can see relatively quite clearly in those graphic novels," he continued. "I'm having a ball lighting it. It's hard work but so rewarding."
The Batman follows various notable Dark Knight films from Christopher Nolan's critically-acclaimed trilogy to Zack Snyder's DCEU films, each having their own established look. Reeves is set on creating his own version of the Caped Crusader and Batman movies in general, and fans can't wait to see what he comes up with.
The Batman is currently set for release on October 1, 2021.
