In a span of 142 minutes, it seems like there still isn’t enough time to provide answers to many questions that Star Wars fans have been curious about. Of course, ending the Skywalker Saga is no easy feat, and the ninth film had to deliver a satisfying conclusion, which is why The Rise of Skywalker writer originally had something different in mind in order to do so.

In a recent interview with Awards Daily, Chris Terrio was asked if there were any talks about making two parts for The Rise of Skywalker, given the number of characters and the volume of exposition needed in the film. “I wish we could have done that,” he answered. “There is a lot of plot in the movie, and as a writer, you always want scenes to let the plot breathe more.”

Terrio admitted that it would have been a “dream” if there was ever a way of doing two parts for the film. “We could have written these characters forever,” he added, especially since there is “so much backstory that had to be left by the wayside.” He also pointed out that George Lucas “always” said for there to be nine movies, which was the “natural size” of the saga.

He revealed that there were a “few initial discussions,” but the conservation regarding the matter didn’t really “advance” further. Terrio also admitted that, as a writer, it “breaks” his heart to “leave stuff on the table” that could have potentially given the story “more depth and nuance” as well as giving the characters more stuff to do. That being said, Terrio made it clear that he is speaking for himself and not for the studio, but he did admit that he wanted to have a Part 1 and Part 2 for Episode IX.
