Kylo Ren is seen arriving at Exogol at the beginning of the movie where he drops down into some sort of dark underground lair. Palpatine's voice was heard saying, "Snoke has trained you well." Kylo's guard is up as he responds to the Emperor, "I killed Snoke. I'll kill you." This was essentially the short explanation given with regards to the character.

In a recent interview with The Huffington Post, The Rise of Skywalker editor Maryann Brandon explains why such a huge twist was addressed quickly at the beginning of the movie. "I just think that came up as a visual effect that we thought would be really fun for an audience, to create a visual that would tell that whole story," she said. Brandon thinks it was successful, add the fact that they didn't have to change "a lot" of dialogue.

The audience sees one shot and they could instantly get what they were trying to imply in a short amount of time, which is practical too, given the amount of story that they had to address in the movie She added, "I love stuff like that. We can just have a moment where you just see something in the background and you go, ‘OK, I totally get that.'"
