Set for release in January of next year, Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage will follow the story of newly-minted teen Jedi Vernestra Rwoh, a young Padawan, along with Avon Starros, after a “galaxy-wide disaster” that leaves them stranded on a jungle moon.

Star Wars shared an excerpt for the upcoming middle-grade novel. “I think adults tend to get bogged down in our very complex yet somehow mundane daily lives,” write Justina Ireland said. “And one of the best things about kids books is we’re allowed to remember that life was once exciting and a vast, magical mystery. Especially Star Wars books!”

Ireland adds that middle-grade books are a “great way” to explore the galaxy and remember why we all “fell in love” with the franchise in the first place. For kids, these kinds of novels are a place for them to “interact with ideas of character and struggle without the limitations imposed by icky grown-ups.”

The excerpt from A Test of Courage sees the dynamic between Avon and Vernestra, with the latter beginning a new chapter in her life. You can read the full excerpt here

Fans ought to be excited about the adventures that await Vern and Avon, and the excerpt certainly makes the former intriguing, especially with the “strange feeling” she has been putting aside.

Star Wars: The High Republic: A Test of Courage is set for release on January 5, 2021.
