Upon losing his hand in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Luke Skywalker lost his saber as well. It found its way to Maz, as revealed in The Force Awakens, but fans are curious to see how it actually ended up in her treasure trove. Now, Star Wars reveals a part of that story and shows who was the first person in possession of it after the time Luke lost it.

This article contains SPOILERS for Star Wars #4.

Writer Charles Soule and artist Jesus Saiz's comic series is set almost immediately after the events of The Empire Strikes Back. The first issue ended with a tease of a hooded figure holding the saber. Now, Luke, Leia, and Lando head back to Cloud City, and all of them have a mission of their own; Luke's objective is to find his saber.

The most recent issue shows Luke still looking for his saber in a trash heap, but he's not having any progress. Then, Leia botches her own mission so the Force alerted Luke that she was in trouble, so he ended up abandoning his search for the weapon.

It was then revealed that the saber was discovered by an Ugnaught. Luke did attempt to use the Force to find it, but he got visions of Yoda telling him that a Jedi is defined by much more than by his lightsaber. He was inspired by the Jedi Master's voice and proceeded to leave Bespin right after he has already saved Leia. This leaves the weapon to the creature, who seemingly doesn't know what it is for.

Of course, this is just a small part of the saber's very long path back to Luke. The tease in the debut issue indicates that the hooded figure holding the weapon isn't another person, but could be a vision of Luke's future.

Star Wars #4 is on sale now.
