The Skywalker Saga has come to an end with J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as the ninth and final installment. Tasked to make The Force Awakens after 10 years following the events of Return of the Jedi, Abrams’ certainly wanted to make a great sequel, and was likely careful with his creative choices and cast.

Though actor John Boyega instantly felt that Oscar Isaac was the perfect fit to play Poe Dameron, Abrams’ apprehension towards making a sequel might have made the director very particular with his decisions, and the actor even teased him for it.

In a clip from the Episode IX documentary (via ET), Boyega recalled Isaac’s audition where he had to read with him. He felt that Isaac was the perfect one that he even doesn’t consider it an audition. “He read the scene and I was kind of like, 'J.J., what are we doing, man? It's him. C'mon, we're wasting time, man,'” Boyega said. “And it’s nice to be able to actualize that chemistry we had on that first read.”

Boyega isn’t the only one who instantly felt that chemistry, because some fans, and even Isaac himself think that Poe and Finn’s relationship was more intimate. The Rise of Skywalker didn’t explore that possibility though, and Isaac would have wanted to push it into that direction too, but he claims that the “Disney overlords” seemingly weren’t ready for that yet.

Having that chemistry on the first read for the role certainly explains why Boyega and Isaac make such a good pair as Finn and Poe on-screen.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now available digitally, while the 4K Ultra, Blu-ray, and DVD will be released on March 31.
