Star Wars Concept Art Reveals Color of Rey's Own Lightsaber

An interesting Star Wars concept art has resurfaced online, showing the earliest designs for the main characters in The Force Awakens.

Shared on Reddit by user Niamor89, the artwork reveals that Rey's final design didn't go through a lot of changes apart from her name, which was originally Kira.

One of the things you will notice is her green lightsaber. At the moment, Rey doesn't have her own lightsaber yet. It looks like she will be inheriting Anakin and Luke's blue lightsaber as opposed to building her own.

Interestingly, green is the color of Luke's lightsaber, the one he used in Return of the Jedi. It hasn't shown up in the Star Wars sequel trilogy so far. Yoda's lightsaber is also green. So, if Rey gets her own, it's already got pretty wicked company in these two Jedi masters. After all, if Lucasfilm and Disney stuck with most of the original ideas for the character, maybe they'll keep this one too in case they ever decide to give her her own lightsaber.

Kira was always envisioned as the central character of the new Star Wars trilogy. She was designed as the "badass" female Jedi who is a loner hothead and gear-head. It was The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams who thought it a good idea that she has no knowledge of Luke Skywalker.

The male character in this concept art is named Sam, and as you can see, he looks a lot like Han Solo. This is because he was supposed to be his and Leia's son. He was referred to as Skyler in some drafts of The Force Awakens script.

So how did they end up with Ben Solo aka Kylo Ren instead? Well, the character played by Adam Driver is a modified iteration of what George Lucas had in mind. It was always planned that one of the main characters in the sequel trilogy would be the son of Han and Leia being pulled to the dark side by Darth Talon from the comics.

However, in the process, Darth Talon morphed into a character called the Jedi Killer, which ultimately inspired Kylo Ren. The difference being Star Wars: The Force Awakens simply skipped to the part where he was already successfully seduced to the dark side. As a result, there was no longer any reason for "Sam" and "Kira" to be allies.

Apart from Sam, another character that was supposed to be Rey's companion in the films was a character only referred to as John Doe. He was a Jedi-turned-bounty hunter. As more ideas came, his connection to Rey was reduced. The character was rewritten as a Republic military officer before ending up as Poe Dameron.

Somewhere along the way, the character of Finn played by John Boyega came to life. He took the place of Sam as Rey's companion.

It was Lawrence Kasdan's idea to have the character be a rogue stormtrooper. He believed it was powerful that one of the leads in the new Star Wars films comes from the "faceless, indistinguishable automatons" that are so prominent in the franchise but were never really fleshed out.
