Star Wars fans seem, or rather try, to forget that Padme met Anakin when he was just a little boy dealing with midichlorians. There's no arguing the fact that while her love for Anakin saved the galaxy far, far away, Padme hasn't always been in love with the Jedi master. Before she decided to marry the future Sith Lord, she already had her share of love affairs.
Those who watched Star Wars: The Clone Wars would know that Padme was first romantically linked to Rush Clovis, a fellow politician. Their romance, which began early in her political career, was alluded to in the episode Senator Spy. Here, Padme first crossed paths with the former member of the Galactic Senate after she was asked to spy on him. In fact, her future love Anakin was there as her bodyguard.
In the brand new book Queen's Shadow, fans will get to see more interactions between the two since Rush is a prominent character in the novel. The extent of his romance with Padme is also fleshed out. One of the moments delved into in the book was the time they worked together to save a planet from drought and famine, which was only mentioned in passing in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Despite learning about Padme's spy mission and true intentions, Rush still decided to continue working with her, even getting her help uncovering the corruption of the Banking Clan to the Senate.
This mission, however, would lead to the doom of their relationship. While they were successful (with Rush named the head of the Banking Clan), a Separatist invasion spoiled the affair, which ultimately led to a bloody battle.
Rush and Padme's ship piloted by Anakin was hit by another ship. The Jedi was able to catch the two, but couldn't support them both for long. Rush ultimately chose to let go of Anakin and fall to his death so Padme could be saved.
