Reports around Sam Raimi, who helmed the original Spider-Man trilogy, has revealed that he is in talks to direct the Doctor Strange sequel. While he is yet to be set for the project, fans are already excited for Raimi's take on the character because it seems like the director has predicted it years ago.
Raimi actually name-dropped the character back in Spider-Man 2. The scene in question involves J.K. Simmons' J. Jonah Jameson where he tries to figure out a catchy name for the wall-crawler with his assistant. The employee then suggests that he could be named Doctor Strange, while Jameson thinks "it's pretty good," he claims that it's already taken.
Although Raimi didn't likely mention the hero as a reference to his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, just the fact that he name-dropped the hero, who hasn't been that big of a character that time, is definitely a nice touch. If Raimi would actually be set as Doctor Strange 2's director, it'll definitely be considered as an epic full-circle moment.
On another note, though Scott Derrickson won't be directing the sequel, he will stay as its executive producer. Despite having no directors set as of late, the studio is still aiming for a May 2021 release.
Given Raimi's work of modern superhero blockbusters, it looks like the sequel is potentially in very good hands.
